The Temporal Code – Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Beginning of the End

“Calling all units, this is not a drill!” The commanding general’s voice echoed through the base, sending a jolt of adrenaline through everyone within earshot.
Captain Amelia Alvarez’s heart raced as she stood amidst the chaos. She grabbed her helmet and sprinted towards the grand atrium, her mind racing with possibilities. “What’s going on?” she demanded, scanning the frantic faces around her.
“They’ve breached the interior barrier!” shouted Corporal Daniels, his eyes wide with fear. He pushed through the crowd, heading straight for the command centre.
Amelia’s stomach dropped. The interior barrier was their last line of defence. If it had been breached, the enemy was already deep within their stronghold. The atrium buzzed with activity as soldiers hurried to their positions, weapons at the ready. The heavy thud of boots on metal floors and the sharp clatter of rifles being loaded created a tense symphony of impending battle.
Amelia took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus. She scanned the room, taking in the scene. The grand atrium, usually a place of order and command, was now a battlefield. The towering columns and high ceilings that once inspired awe now seemed oppressive, casting long shadows over the huddled troops.
“Form up!” she barked, rallying her squad. “We hold this position at all costs!” Her voice cut through the noise, and her team snapped to attention, their faces set with grim determination.
In the distance, the sound of gunfire and explosions grew louder, signalling that the enemy was closing in. Amelia tightened her grip on her rifle, her mind flashing to her family back home. She had to protect them, protect everyone. There was no room for failure.
As the first wave of enemies burst through the doors, a fierce battle cry rose from her squad. The atrium erupted into chaos, the air thick with smoke and the acrid smell of gunpowder. Amelia moved with precision and purpose, leading her team with a mix of calculated strategy and raw determination.
In that moment, the grand atrium was not just a structure of steel and concrete; it was the last bastion of hope. And Amelia Alvarez was ready to fight until her last breath to defend it.

“Detective Alexander! Detective Alex! Detective…!”
“Yeah, what’s the emergency?” Detective Alex’s groggy voice echoed down the hall as he stumbled out of bed, his hair a tousled mess.
“They’ve breached the interior barrier!”
The metallic door flew open with a clang, and Detective Alex burst out, one hand struggling to get into his robe sleeve while the other tried to tame his wild hair.
“Sir, did you not hear the alarm?” The urgency in the officer’s voice cut through the chaos.
“Oh God, Amelia!” Alex’s eyes widened in alarm as he wiped drool from the corner of his mouth. His heart pounded as the gravity of the situation hit him, adrenaline coursing through his veins.
The night, once silent and still, was now charged with a sense of impending danger. Alex’s mind raced as he tried to piece together what had happened. He couldn’t afford to waste a single moment; lives depended on him.
“Get everyone to safety,” he commanded, his voice now sharp and authoritative. “I’m on my way.”

“We have to take action. The temporal code must be found and retrieved!” commanded the hooded figure, their voice echoing ominously.
“Who is heroic or even dumb enough to take that sort of journey?” someone scoffed from the shadows.
Just then, the steel doors burst open with a resounding clang, and Detective Alex strode in, determination etched on his face.
“Where is Amelia stationed?” he demanded, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife.
The hooded figure turned, a glint of surprise and approval in their eyes. “I think we’ve just found the person we’re looking for.”
“Amelia has been sent to retrieve the temporal code, youngling,” a deep, gravelly voice emerged from the shadows, echoing with urgency and mystery.
“It is of utmost importance that you find her!”
“But she went without telling me. Then again, she’s always going off without telling me. People think she’s Wonder Woman, but I’m always wondering where she is…” Alex muttered, his frustration mixing with concern.
“Okay. Random information we do not need to know.” The voice interrupted, emphasising the seriousness of the situation.
Gunfire erupted overhead, mingling with the chaotic sounds of a fierce battle.
“Hurry! We do not have time!” Another voice urged urgently.
“The fate of the world depends on you, Alexander!”
“You must go find her!”
“Yes, I must!” Alex replied resolutely, attempting to muster enthusiasm despite the doubt creeping into his voice.
A hooded figure approached him, cloaked in shadows, and extended a strange, pulsating device towards him. “First, you must find the Temporal Code. It has been scattered through time. Along the way, you will find her.”
“Yes, very true,” echoed the figures around them, their faces obscured by darkness.
Suddenly, a deafening crash reverberated through the room as the steel doors rattled violently.
“Hurry!” The urgency in the voices grew louder.
Detective Alex, his heart pounding with determination, instinctively pressed the glowing red button on the device. Instantly, a surge of energy engulfed him, tearing through space and time. In a flash, he vanished, leaving behind only a pair of worn-out shoes.

Moments later, Alex found himself in a bustling medieval marketplace, the air thick with the scent of spices and the clamour of merchants hawking their wares. Confusion swept over him momentarily, but he steadied himself, clutching the mysterious device tightly.
The device emitted a soft hum, guiding him towards the first fragment of the Temporal Code. As he navigated through the throngs of people in unfamiliar garb, Alex’s senses remained on edge, alert for any sign of Amelia or the elusive artifacts that could save their world.
With each step, the stakes grew higher, and Alex knew that every decision, every discovery, would shape the course of his perilous journey through time.
